AUGUST 2019


DREAM IT, BE IT AWARD WINNER
Jennifer Johnson was awarded the 2019 Soroptimist International of Las Cruces Dream It, Be It Scholarship.  She is a 2019 Las Cruces High School graduate and is studying metallurgical engineering at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.  Johnson became fascinated with materials science early in her high school career, learned welding in FFA, and became one of the first women to earn a top-five ranking in state competition.  She plans to use the $500 DIBI award to defray the cost of room and board, books and lab fees.

SILC CELEBRATES 50 YEARS IN LAS CRUCES
Soroptimist International of Las Cruces [SILC] kicked off its 50th year in Las Cruces in August with a new board of directors, Joan Dormody, Lynda Hayes, Jan Brydon, Mary Brallier, Margo Bencomo and Nancy Marsh. The club’s events for 2019-20 include its first ever women’s film festival; the Soroptimist Challenge hike-with-your-heart program; Live Your Dream educational grants for women; and the fourth annual Dream It, Be It High School Girls Conference.

LIVE YOUR DREAM AWARD WINNERS

Soroptimist International of Las Cruces has awarded Live Your Dream education grants to Las Crucens' Olga Ramirez and Ruth Lawson, and El Pasoan Martha Minor.  Olga Ramirez is pursuing an Associate’s degree at Doña Ana Community College.  Her ultimate goal of becoming an elementary teacher.  El Pasoan Martha Minor is enrolled in El Paso Community College, completing an Associate’s degree in Kinesiology.  Ruth Lawson’s career goals are to become a Licensed Professional Counselor and to work with victims of sexual abuse who may be struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, or anxiety.


JANUARY 2019

DREAM IT, BE IT CONFERENCE
Soroptimist International of Las Cruces hosted its third Dream It, Be It Girls’ Conference on February 9, 2019 to help high school girls learn how to achieve their educational and career goals. Girls from 12 high schools, from Hatch in Southern New Mexico to Fabens in West Texas, attended this all-day event at the Doña Ana Community College (DACC) East Mesa Campus.
